Don’t Take my Baby

The Story

This song stemmed from a free-write that came to me in a dream. I awoke to the newspaper headlines “War in Iraq, question of starting the draft.” At the time my boyfriend would have been a perfect A1 candidate, I was scared, and worried. This song later was my number one requested song, and was the feature at a dozen protests, including the California Democratic convention, T.V. shows, and radio interviews.

Lyrics

Don’t take my baby away from me,
Don’t send him out on the open sea,
Don’t claim his life for the land of the free,
Don’t take my baby away from me.

Tell him why you fight this war,
Tell my baby what you’re fighting for,
Tell him that I love him when he can’t stand it no more,
Don’t make my baby fight your war.

Chorus:
I know, I know I’m not the only one
But please don’t take, don’t take my loved one
Away from me

Don’t put a gun in his hand,
And tell him it’s for some grand plan.
Don’t make him kill the enemy,
They have lovers at home just like me.

I don’t want to see him like this war,
I don’t want my baby supporting more
Don’t take him away from me I love my baby

Chorus

Don’t take my baby away from me,
To fight a war over blood money.
Don’t let him die for the economy,
And then send his coffin home to me.

Don’t march my baby to his death,
And send me letter saying he did his best.
Don’t take way his dieing breath,
Let him die upon my breast.

Chorus:

Don’t take my baby away from me,
Don’t send him out on the open sea.
Don’t claim his life for the land of the free,
Don’t take my baby away from me.

Don’t put him in a gray suit,
And march him in with the other troops.
When he dies I don’t want a salute,
I can’t take his flag till you die too.
