Blue Shade of Gray

The Story

In my hometown the red light district was a street named Mendocino Avenue. One night I was walking home and a prostitute and I began to talk about her life: this song is her story.

Lyrics

Down on Mendocino,
When the night crawls to fly,
When the black bird flutters cross a melancholy sky.

She comes a calling,
Smeared blue with lipstick red,
Her high heels may be tapping,
The minuet turned rag.

What a blue shade of gray,
What she losing,
The night takes away, takes away

A ghost amidst the legend,
Her face aged as wine.
Her wrinkles tell the story,
Of the man that robbed her blind.

It’s true he loved her dearly,
But his faded eyes did stray,
When her lips weren’t so supple,
That fool he ran away.

Chorus

Her eyes slightly fade,
With every street lit night,
And every time she opens up her beauty pays the price.

She’ll turn her face away,
Just to ease the pain,
But she knows she’s nothing more,
Than just a crying shame.

Chorus
