Teaching Style/Philosophy
My specialty is working with girls and women from seven to adult. I take them from learning the guitar to writing and performing—helping them to find their voice through their music. I teach the songs that they are listening to, the music they adore. As one of my student says, “I got to learn songs I actually know and love, got help putting my own songs together, and got to focus on whatever I felt I needed the most help on.” Most of my students like to divide lesson time between working on singing, playing, and songwriting. I help students set their own goals, and design a curriculum that can take them from beginning guitar to on-stage performance. When my students have mastered their song I record them performing it, and I host public showcases for them as well, video-recording their performances, and giving them the chance to build their stage confidence and fan base. As one student stated, “Tai gave me the courage to go out and perform.”
Tai Shan’s Teaching Biography:
In four years of teaching Tai Shan has won praise for her supportive approach and has developed a large and respected studio. Her students have performed shows across the Northwest, received record deals, recorded numerous CDs, and won songwriting contests such as the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. She has also taught courses in songwriting, rock, and improvisation at the Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle and at the Right Brain Center for the Arts. Tai graduated cum laude from Cornish College of the Arts in 2007. A singer-songwriter herself, she is known for her unusual chord voicings, wide, sweeping melodies, and detailed lyrics. She performs regularly throughout the western U.S. and Canada, and has been featured on nationally released CDs, international videos, and TV and radio.
